Homarus Eco-Centre
Awareness, education, sustainability: such are the key terms that constantly motivate the team at the Homarus Eco-Centre, located in Pointe-du-Chêne, New Brunswick.
This interpretive centre offers a unique and interactive experience related to the mysterious world of lobsters and marine ecosystems through guided tours that give visitors an opportunity to see and touch the crustaceans. Opened in 2013, the Eco-Centre is run by Homarus Inc., a non-profit organization, and provides visitors a holistic and educational experience typical of the Shediac region. A few years on, this centre, created by the Maritime Fishermen’s Union, is thriving.
Homarus has fulfilled its mission to develop tools to help ensure the sustainability of the resource and the Maritime lobster fishery. Obviously, a major part of this has come from raising awareness regarding the importance of respecting the marine habitat and its resources.
Among the centre’s excellent initiative is the partnership it has developed with New Brunswick lobster fishermen to supply egg-bearing female lobsters for a breeding and larvae-stocking project.
The centre also raises awareness through their adopt-a-lobster project, which gives the public an opportunity to adopt a lobster that will be released into the ocean once it is sufficiently mature.
